As stated in the welcome section of this website, NFS has carried out its
mission over the years with an utmost concern for the safety of our
employees, our community, and the environment. However, due to the
nature of our business and the unique environment in which we operate relative
to information protection, many opportunities have been lost in the past
relative to communication with you. Changes in regulatory policy are
providing an opportunity to remedy that. Our goal here is to make it as
easy as possible for you to find key documents and letters that relate to
the safety and security of our activities as documented by our regulators
and legislators.
We hope this compilation will help you stay abreast of
the situation. If you notice that we have missed a key document,
please let us know and, if appropriate, we will post it as soon as
possible.

Comprehensive Safety Culture Improvement Initiativ
(5/19/2008)
|
| This file is NFS' submittal to the USNRC with a comprehensive description of NFS' initiatives to improve safety culture. A key aspect of this plan is NFS' action plans relating to the recommendations of the recently concluded safety culture asssessment, which was conducted by a board of independent experts. The board's (reffered to as the Safety Culture Board of Advisors, or SCuBA) report titled "2007 Independent Safety Culture Assessment - RESULTS REPORT" is an enclosure to NFS reponse document. |

Sierra Club Handouts
(3/4/2008)
|
| Attached is a copy of the handouts from Linda Modica (Sierra Club). Ms. Modica handed these out during the NRC’s poster session. Note that the Sierra Club says that a DOE/NNSA report (DOE/EIS-0240-SA1) estimates that 1 in 71 residents of Erwin will fall victim to a latent cancer and die as a result of NFS” downblending operations. The Sierra Club misinterpreted the results in the DOE/NNSA report. Please see the NFS news release (Mar. 3, 2008) that relates to the accuracy of this handout. |

DOE/NNSA Report (Oct 2007)
(3/4/2008)
|
| A copy of the DOE/NNSA report (it can also be downloaded from http://www.eh.doe.gov/NEPA/pub_sa_toc.html). On page 11 of the DOE/NNSA report, there is a footnote “c”. The footnote “c” states that the calculated offsite population risk is equivalent to the following increased annual risk of a Latent Cancer Fatality (LCF) occurring in the total population: 1 chance in 71 for NFS. The authors of the report were contacted regarding the information in the report. The authors indicated that the 1 in 71 annual risk of a latent cancer fatality means that there is 1 chance in 71 that one person in the 50 mile radius (i.e., year 2020 estimated population of 1,287,973) would contract and die from a fatal cancer over their lifetime from NFS downblending operations. |
